We recently raised $3000 for friends and supporters across the country (and even one donor from Japan) for our Cost of War sign that now sits on the corner of 149th St. and Ash Ave. Unitarian Universalists have a long tradition of involvement in working to improve the world and sustain the common good. A look at our history reveals early proponents of democracy, staunch opponents of slavery and fighters for women's suffrage. In the mid 20th century, Unitarian Universalists worked for Civil Rights and racial justice, opposed war and the proliferation of nuclear arms, and worked to strengthen the separation of church and state and promoted freedom of speech. More recent history has seen a continuation of these efforts as the Association and its individual congregations placed emphasis on working to build a multicultural, diverse anti-racist organization. This focus on anti-oppression has included working to build just, equitable and open societies locally and nationally; and securing equal rights for all citizens, in particular the recent endeavor to secure marriage for gay and lesbian couples. This Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Queens has been involved in some of these efforts over the years — from the controversies of the 1960's to being a voice for inclusion in recent years. Our work involves us in a network of larger organizations and includes much smaller gestures, like making fairly traded coffee and tea available to members and friends. We are a Welcoming Congregation, dedicating ourselves to be truly inclusive of the lesbian, gay bisexual and transgender community. We invite you to join with us as we continue to do all we can to build a world of justice and peace in ways big and small.
